MSG Secretariat Received French Ambassador to Vanuatu and Solomon Islands, H.E Pierre Fournier

PORT VILA, VANUATU (13 April 2021): The Melanesian Spearhead Group (MSG) Secretariat today received a courtesy call from the French Ambassador to Vanuatu and Solomon Islands, His Excellency Pierre Fournier.

He was warmly received by the Acting Director General of the MSG Secretariat, George Hoa’au, who was accompanied by his Senior Executive Officer, Christopher Waiwori.

The courtesy meeting this morning was to have an update on the progress of the implementation of the Noumea Accord.

H.E Fournier said that in light of the third and upcoming independence referendum in New Caledonia, the French Government has invited all parties to Paris for further dialogue.

ADG Hoa’au acknowledged H.E Fournier and commended the efforts of the French Government in continuing to encourage dialogue between the parties concerned. While he reiterated the MSG Secretariat’s continued support for the Kanak and Socialist National Liberation Front (FLNKS) as a member of the MSG, he said that Members’ struggle for the right to self-determination was one of the main reasons for the establishment of the Group.

ADG Hoa’au said the MSG Secretariat recognises the work that the French Government is doing “as it is important to have dialogue in a coherent manner and dialogue is also naturally a custom of Melanesians”.

ADG Hoa’au re-emphasised that the MSG Secretariat will continue to render support for the FLNKS, in line with the original mandate by Leaders and the 2018 Action Plan adopted by Leaders in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea in 2018.
