Re: Petition to the Vanua’aku Pati National Congress to adopt a resolution for United Liberation Movement for West Papua (ULMWP) to be admitted as a full member of Melanesian Spearhead Group
I write on behalf of the Vanuatu Free West Papua Association (VFWPA) to congratulate you, and the members of the national executive, and all the supporters of Vanua’aku Pati throughout the country for this special occasion of celebration the Golden jubilee of the Pati. The has been Pati has been the pillar and pioneer of political struggle for the liberation of New Hebrides from colonial rule unto political independence and the establishment of Republic of Vanuatu as a Sovereign State in South West Pacific.
Mr. President,
On the same note, and in the spirit of liberation, I wish to register before this national congress the wishes of the Vanuatu Free West Papua Association, and the aspirations of the United Liberation Movement for West Papua.
It has always been our prayers, and dedication to advocate for the liberation of West Papua to gain its political independence, and gain her sovereignty as an Independent State. On that same note, I wish to reiterate that, Vanua’aku Pati throughout the history of our nationhood, has been instrumental in advocating for the West Papuan cause for political liberation.
As such, I wish to highlight to your attention, and the members of the national congress, some of the involvement of Vanua’aku Pati in the liberation struggle for West Papua.
- Before 1980, Rex Rumakiak was invited and welcome to work in the Vanua’aku Pati office, and help campaign for the West Papuan political struggle for independence.
- In the year 2001, the Wantok blong Yumi Bill on Vanuatu’s support for West Papua was unanimously approved by Parliament when Edward Natapei, then President of Vanua’aku Pati, was Prime Minister.
- When, Joe Natuman, then President of Vanua’aku Pati, was Prime Minister, we witness the unification of the three main West Papuan political organization into one block, established, and known as the “United Liberation Movement for West Papua (ULMWP) under the Saralana Declaration.
- In the year 2017, the Vanua’aku Pati national congress which was held in South East Ambrym, passed a resolution to support the West Papuan cause.
- In the year 2020, Mr. President, in your capacity as the current Prime Minister, you inform our Association, that, Vanuatu will not divert in its stand on West Papua.
Mr. President,
I wish to put forward a new petition to this national congress to seek the support and adoption of a resolution to support the application of the United Liberation Movement for West Papua (ULMWP), to be a full member of MSG.
The Melanesian Spearhead group is the only regional forum that, gathers all Melanesia countries together to discuss their issues. We belief that, all people of the Melanesian race should be given the equal opportunity to be full members of the Melanesian Spearhead Group.
With that, I thank you President, for taking our request into attention, in this 50th national congress of Vanua’aku Pati.
