THE Government plans to develop a blue-carbon policy to provide an enabling framework for blue-carbon activities, an official says.

Gwen Sissiou, the general manager of REDD+ and Mitigation, said the Climate Change Development Authority (CCDA) recognised the importance of blue carbon and its activities

“CCDA is hosting this workshop with the purpose of understanding blue carbon activities in the country, as well as challenges, gaps and barriers that prevent the implementation and progress of blue carbon,” she said.

“The outcome of this workshop should assist CCDA and its stakeholders to develop a framework that may lead to developing a blue carbon policy.”

The three-day workshop is to bring to light the key role marine ecosystems play in the reduction of carbon emissions, and how best the Government can regulate the activities through a policy framework.

Sissiou said PNG had a diverse area of ecosystems that had played a vital role in storing carbon.

The ecosystems helped especially maritime villages and people to adapt to severe storms, flooding, and other climate-related threats.
